Over Memorial Weekend the 44th Folklife Music Festival happened. The event was took place from the 23th to 25th (from Saturday to Monday) and featured performances from different cultures, countries, and genres.
This year Folklife focused on the cultural background and influence of hip hop. They featured a rap artist named Draze who rapped about his Zimbabwe background and included traditional African instruments. The festival admission was free but gladly took donations. Folklife also featured local Seattle performers and had around 6 different stages. Street performers were also scattered throughout Folklife and there were many delicious food vendors and artists. Overall the festival was a success, and lots of fun!
Oil Rig in Seattle
The first of the two oil rigs are arriving in the Port of Seattle today, despite the city's warning that it doesn't have the right permits. The oil rigs belong to a company called Royal Dutch Shell, better known as Shell. They're collecting supplies for this summer, before they continue on to drill in the Chuckchi Sea off Alaska's Northwest Coast.
The oil rigs are very controversial and environmentalists are planning a number of protests, including a kayak floatilla. John Sellers says; "It's the perfect tactic to paddle out and meet the rigs on the water. The rigs are on the water, that's where they do their business, that's where they're doing their damage."
The company still needs other permits from state and federal agencies, including one to drill from the Bureau of safety and Environmental Enforcement. The oil rig was given permission to dock, while they were still in the process of receiving the permits. The Shell spokesman, Curtis Smith said about Monday's approval, "It is an important milestone and signals confidence regulators have in our plan."
The oil rig has been in the water and working its way to Alaska for quite sometime. Just before the arrival in Seattle, it arrived in Port Angeles where 48 protesters paddled out. Other protesters are looking to do the same here in Seattle

Calbuco Eruption
By Nathaniel and Emilio
Calbuco is a stratovolcano in Southern Chile, located southeast of Llanquihue Lake and northwest of Chapo Lake, in the Los Lagos Region. The volcano and the surrounding area are protected within Llanquihue National Reserve.
The Calbuco volcano in southern Chile has erupted twice in the span of a few hours. Calbuco last erupted in 1972 and is potentially one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Chile. About 23½ inches of ash fell in some places, according to the Ministry of Interior and Public Safety.
The situation is relatively calm right now, although people are understandably anxious about what could happen next. There are no reports of deaths, missing people or injuries.
“In this situation, with the eruption column so high, the main risk is that it collapses, falls due to gravity because of its own weight and causes a pyroclastic flow,” Gabriel Orozco, a volcanologist with Chile’s geological and mining service, said on local TV.
“It sounded like a big tractor trailer passing by the road, rattling and shaking, guttural rumbling … We left everything there, grabbed my kid, my dog, got in the car with my wife,” Moffat said. A pyroclastic flow is a superheated current of gas and rock that can destroy nearly everything in its path and travel at speeds upwards of 200 km to 300 km per
This situation could turn worse because of the pyroclastic flow. However, hopefully Chile will be fine.
87th Annual Academy Awards Review
By Aisha and Nathaniel
Last Sunday the 87th Annual Academy Awards took place in Hollywood, where amazing talent lingered in the air. It was a fun filled night with powerful speeches and hilarious stunts from the host Neil Patrick Harris who has also had his time in the spotlight. There were many performances that made the night special. For example Lady Gaga singing the Sound of Music, John Legend and Common performing Glory, as well as amazing speeches like Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor, Graham Moore for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Patricia Arquette for Best Supporting Actress who all gave very empowering and motivational speeches. Although it was an overall success, the number of views has gone down substantially. Could the Oscars and the movie industry itself taken a turn for the worse?

Twenty-seven year old, Kaleb Whitby had been driving down the familiar stretch of Interstate 84 east of Baker City in Portland, roughly an hour before sunrise. He'd been on the road for several minutes on January 17th and engulfed in an audiobook. He then spotted a semi-truck trailer in front of him start to sway. Has he downshifted and quickly tapped on his brakes and felt his 2008 Chevy Silverado slip on the black ice underneath him. He lost control and collided with the back of the trailer. He struck the trailer head-on and slid about thirty feet. The airbag didn't deploy and his truck went silent. His truck cocooned him tightly and he struggled to climb out. He grabbed his pocket knife and cut the seat belt and climbed out of the vehicle. Whitby should have died on Interstate 84 on January 17th, leaving his wife a widow and his son fatherless. Though, to just his luck, he walked away from the wreck with a black eye and a few scratches. It was a miracle that he survived and was able to be reunited with his family shortly after.Possible Oldest Picture of a Human Found
by Luke
When you first look at this picture it doesn't seem like much, just a dark and blank photo of a deserted city. But when you really look at it you'll see a man getting his shoes cleaned. The camera it was taken with had an exposure of 7 minutes so the city looks empty but in reality the man getting his shoes cleaned and the cleaner (harder to see) are just relatively staying still compared to the carts and people walking. This image, taken in Paris, France in 1838 was illegibly photographed by the famous French photographer named Louis Daguerre. The photo shows the Boulevard du Temple, a fashionable area of shops, cafés and theaters.
This photo, although a great discovery, sn not close to being the first photograph. That
credit belongs to Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, who used a crude camera to capture the view from his French Estate in 1826 or 1827. But with almost everyone having a smart phone in there pockets and almost 350 millions photos being uploaded to Facebook per year Louis Daguerre’s achievement might seem insignificant but it was a very large accomplishment for his time. E. coli Scare
The September 28th e coli scare in Mercer Island affected schools, shops and lunches for many people.
Shops were forced to close to prevent spreading e coli in drinks and fresh farm foods. Schools couldn’t use fresh lunch while the e coli problem is going on; canned foods were the only school lunches allowed because fresh foods could have spread the bacteria.
Houses on Mercer Island were instructed to boil water before consumption because the microscopic bacteria moves within liquids and was found to be in tap water (the water from the sink). Bottled water or boiled water was the only water was ok to drink or used in cooking until the e coli notice was lifted.
On 10/13/14 the city of Mercer Island announced that the boil water advisory had been lifted and the water is ok to drink. Lets hope that West Seattle never had the same scare!

Freedom Tower Opening
By Chris
13 years after the tragic events of 9/11, the New York skyline is finally complete once again. In On Monday publishing giant Conde Nast will start moving into the One World Trade Center. The 104 story, $3.9 billion dollar building, is the tallest in in America. It is the centerpiece of the 16 acre site where the Twin Towers once stood.
Building began on 2004, but it stalled and building wasn't started again until 2006. It has 86 usable floors, with the base occupying floors 1-19. It has a three floor observation deck located on floors 100-102, and the observatory will be open to the public in Spring 2015. The building is extremely sustainable, with much of the material used on the interior and structure being recycled. It also has a rainwater collection system, ultra clear windows for better light and an array of other features.
Many people are worried about the security of the building considering what happened on 9/11. But there are many security features in place to make sure nothing happens. Theses include 3-foot thick reinforced concrete walls for all stairwells and elevator shafts. Sprinkler systems, extra-wide, pressurized stairwells. A dedicated set of stairwells exclusively for the use of firefighters, and biological and chemical filters throughout its ventilation system. There are also extra security measures, so if you decide to visit, you will be plenty safe.Ebola Outbreak
By Kate and Kayla
The first case of Ebola occurred in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. It was named after the Ebola River due to the fact that the virus had originated there. When the outbreak first occurred, over 300 human cases were reported which eventually led to over 200 deaths. Since the discovery of the disease, there have been roughly 5000 cases. Though cases have occurred periodically over the years, these past months have resulted in the biggest outbreak yet. Within this most recent outbreak there have been over 4000 cases and 2500 deaths.
Ebola is a extremely infectious virus, however it is moderately contagious. Exposure to the disease is caused by contact with body fluids or contaminated objects from an infected person or animal. Typically it takes eight to ten days to develop symptoms. Symptoms include but are not limited to weakness, fever, aches, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, rash, red eyes, chest pain, throat sores, difficulty breathing or swallowing and bleeding, both internally and externally.
Currently, Americans have been developing experimental drugs to potentially cure humans of the virus. Specifically, there is one partially drug none as ZMapp which was developed by a biotech firm by the name of Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. based in San Diego. The drug had been formally tested on only four monkeys prior to the distribution for humans. Two monkeys were given the treatment after 24 hours of infection while the other two monkeys were given treatment after 48 hours. All four of the monkeys survived and cured. In addition, one monkey, who was not treated, died within five days of exposure. The medicine is a three-mouse monoclonal antibody, meaning that mice were exposed to pieces of the Ebola virus. The antibodies were then generated within the mice's blood and were later harvested to create the medicine.
In conclusion, Ebola is still a current issue and means of treatment are extremely low. Mud Slide Catastrophe
Isabele and Scarlett
On March 22, in the Snohomish County there was a tragic landslide taking 30 lives and leaving 13 people missing. The landslide left the Snohomish County devastated, creating mass destruction for the small town. Here at Westside we sympathize with the families impacted by this terrible event. We personally have driven through this area many times and can not believe the damage that has been done.
There have been many brave volunteers searching for victims and also cleaning up the mess. The rescue crews have used bulldozers, shovels and their hands to comb through the mud, searching for any signs of life or death. This land has been known to have landslides before but nothing this massive. The civilians and authority of the Snohomish County worry for the future of this town. We at Westside hope for a brighter future for them. Crimea Leaves Ukraine, Ukrainian Troops Kicked Out, and more Sanction for Everybody
By Grant
As of this last week the Russian Federation will recognize Crimea as part of Russia. The overwhelming 97% yes vote that was taken last…………... is believed to have been rigged by Russian officials. During the Russian takeover, Ukraine forces were still held up in their bases as Russia took control. They were given until last Friday to join Russia, retire, or to go back to Ukraine. Many military bases had already been overrun by local pro Russian militia and Russian troops while the Ukrainians were waiting for orders that never came. Approximately 80 Ukraine soldiers have been captured when their bases were stormed by militia. The Ukrainian government is demanding their release.
The annexation of Crimea has been called an outrage by much of the international community. The U.S. and all of the EU have retaliated against Russia with sanctions against many in Putin's inner circle. These sanctions freeze all of their assets in those countries and prevent travel to said countries. Russia has responded with their own sanctions on American and EU officials.
John McCain had this to say about the sanctions put on him. “I guess that means my spring break in Siberia is off, my Gazprom stock is lost, and my secret bank account in Moscow is frozen. Nonetheless, I will never cease my efforts on behalf of the freedom, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea.”Helicopter Crash In Seattle
By Henry and Luke
At about 7:50 am, Tuesday on the 18th of March a KOMO 4 news helicopter crashed in the parking lot of the Space needle. The victims of this crash where pilot Gary Pfitzner and photographer Bill Strothman. Three cars were destroyed in this crash, in one of them was a 38 year old man. He managed to escape but suffered 50% of his body being burned. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a large plume of black smoke rising into the air. Pedestrians were from then on blocked out from the City Centre by firefighters and police. Our thoughts go out to the family's and the KOMO 4 news broadcast teams for their lose.
LA Earthquake
by Jackson
On Monday a 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook Los Angeles, California. While the quake hit, a news studio was live. One of the anchors made an unforgettable face that has now became a meme known as "Earthquake Face". Earthquakes are actually pretty common in LA because most of most of California is on the San Andreas Fault which are where two tectonic plates collide. this earthquake rocked many resident’s houses at 6:30 AM and woke many people up. Lucky there was no damage done; just some objects falling of shelves and kitchen drawers slipped out. There were also no reported deaths.
The Ukraine Conflict
By Kenji & Henry
On Friday, February 28, Russia's President Vladimir Putin deployed sixteen thousand troops in a week to Crimea, Ukraine. W Putin is not showing any signs of backing down. "So far, Ukraine armed forces have exercised restraint and refrained from active resistance to the aggression but they are in full operational readiness," Ukrainian Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev said. People around the country are saying that this is the most controversial decision Putin has ever made. It has even gotten more intense than ever, as additional Russian troops poured into the Crimea region. People are wondering if there will be fighting between Ukraine and Russian troops. Right now in Crimea, Russian troops arrived at a ferry crossing in Kerch, Ukraine. Border guards have reported sightings of guarded Russian armored vehicles. President Obama is staying fairly neutral but is strongly advising Russia to pull out Ukraine. US armed forces are staying out of the conflict but still haven't taken that out of the plan if necessary.
Superbowl Parade
by Chrissy and Kenji
The Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl parade was a once in a lifetime experience. There were more than 700,000 fans attending the parade. Fans from all around the US and Canada came to participate in the parade and see some of their favorite Seattle Seahawks. Seahawk players traveled in open military vehicles, and their families traveled in buses. Seahawk management traveled in Ducks and Humvees. Seahawks’ running back, Marshawn Lynch, was on the front of one of the Ducks, throwing skittles into the crowd. Fans repaid him with a Native American tribal drum. When players Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas passed by, the crowd started chanting LOB (legion of boom) repeatedly. Although the parade was all in good spirit, it did cause some damage to The Pergola, a historical site Downtown. Some local businesses were also damaged. Not to mention the hardship workers faced trying commute to and from work. Despite this, it was an amazing day for Seattle sports and the Pacific Northwest in general.
Seahawks Super Bowl XLVIII
By Luke and Henry
After playing the 49ers in a tight game, the Seahawks pulled out on top last Sunday! Tension rose to an unbearable level in 4th quarter. The 49ers kept driving closer and closer to the Seahawks end zone, but with twenty seconds left in the game, and the score 23-17 the 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick lofted the ball into the 49ers endzone. As the ball soared in the air towards Michael Crabtree, Richard Sherman, a Seahawks cornerback, jumped up and swatted it away. Instantly Malcolm Smith intercepted and threw himself to the ground to insure he didn't lose the ball. The Seahawks are headed to the Superbowl in two weeks to play the Denver Broncos.
WHEN YOU THINK OF RACE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF?
"Racism is not about how you look, it is about how people assign meaning to how you look."
-Robin D.G Kelley, historian.

The Race Exhibit is an amazing experience and an insightful exhibit about race at the Pacific Science Center. More than two hundred thousand visitors have come to visit so far.
On Thursday the 5th of December, the seventh graders went to Pacific Science Center for this very purpose. Greta on the the seventh graders explained that her favorite and the most impacting part of the exhibit was when she learned that Sickle Cell Anemia not only affected black people, but white people as well. She learned that race does not determine disease. Students also attended a forty minute movie about Jerusalem for their upcoming unit on world religion.
"It was just so in-depth about everyday life, what life would be like in Jerusalem." - Greta

On Friday, after a boat capsized in the Puget Sound off Alkai, due to big waves, there was a rescue effort. Three crew members survived; unfortunately, the Captain of the boat did not. He is identified as 40-year-old Anthony Collins of Port Orchard. He was found in the boat’s cabin more than half an hour after it flipped; and was flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center after SFD divers got him out. He was in critical condition, was unresponsive, and had been under the boat for 30 minutes at least. The three survivors, were taken ashore by the Coast Guard and were in good condition.
I wrote this because I saw the helicopters fly out myself. When I saw some rescue boats I got freaked out. My mom and I were wondering what happened, so we went onto the internet and I found a live video of the rescue. When I found out that night, that the captain died, I couldn't help feeling sad, it must have been horrible for them.

THE WIND STORM
by Greta
Saturday, Nov. 2 was certainly a crazy day! Oh, you don't remember? It was the crazy wind storm that overtook parts of Seattle. Some people had their lights flicker on and off periodically, and some even lost their power!
There was also a fair amount of destruction. A lot of big branches were knocked off of trees, and my neighbor's skylight got blown off of his roof and shattered-- and it was a 4x6' piece of glass!
Maybe it's just me, but the weather seems to have gone crazy lately. Yesterday we saw an umbrella up on an electrical wire about 15 feet off the ground-- here's a picture.
FAT BURGER
Good news Westside! There is a new burger joint. It is called Fatburger and is on Alki by Starbucks. West Seattle has been needing a good burger place and now there is one. When I went I had the bacon burger and it was delicious. They also had big milkshakes for not very much money. It is crowded, but there are always seats available. The waiters also know the menu very well.
Check it out, you will not regret it! For more info go to www.Fatburger.com

What holiday is coming up? It was celebrated last Saturday, October 26th at the Seattle Center. Still don't know what it is? Here is a second clue: there were sugar skulls, dancing, music, crafts, and pretend altars.
The holiday is the Day of the Dead, in Spanish Èl Día de los Muertos!
However, the Seattle Center isn't the only place that celebrates this event; Westside School does, too! Veronica Hellar, our Spanish teacher, began the tradition of decorating sugar skulls in the classroom. The process is such: the 7th and 8th graders create the sugar skulls and then the rest of the middle school colors and frosts them.
The Day of the Dead is a holiday that is celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries and honors the dead, valuing who they were when they were alive. It is a time of happiness and remembering loved ones, not sadness or fear (unlike what some might think).
The Day of the Dead is celebrated on October 31st, November 1 and November 2nd. So if you or your family wants to celebrate their lost loved ones, this is when to do so.
And remember! The Day of the Dead is not the same thing as Halloween or El Día de los Brujas.By Olivia
