Westside's New School Building

By Blake and Chris

Our new schools completion is just around the corner and the staff is hyped. The new building has been a goal of Westside’s board and administration for a long time.  After many years of searching and discussion they have chosen Hillcrest Presbyterian Church as the location of the new school. Due to the sensitivity there is not very much information on the design of the new building because not all of it has been finalized. What has been told to us is that the building will be significantly remodeled. Many place will be lifted and elongated, and much more is to be decided. We will move into the new school in approximately two years. All of the kids and staff at Westside are excited for the new building!

Seahawks Swag

by Jackson

This is a pic collage of the best Seahawks gear in Sea Town #Seattle. There are shoes, socks, shirts, hats and even Seahawks inspired shot glasses. Also there are a lot of Super Bowl T-shirts around. (I even own one myself). This pic collage basically shows the most geared up fan mixed with Channing Tatum! What’s not to love about that?

Where are you from and how long have you lived here?
I recently moved from Los Angeles to Seattle. This is my third month here.
What is your title at Westside?
I work as the Front Office receptionist. I greet new people, answer the phone, and take care of the children who aren't feeling well.
What was your previous job?
I have always worked in education. Specifically in college admission, helping seniors in high school prepare for college applications.
What do you like about Westside?
I love the community here at Westside. Coming from Los Angeles to Seattle, you can really tell the difference in the communities. There are so many happy people and so much positive energy.
What are the pros and cons about your job?
There are many pros in my job. For example, I live very close to this school, 3 1/2 minutes to be exact, so I am able to eat lunch at home and see my dog and husband. One of the hard parts of my job is that I have to sit all day. Luckily this problem has been fixed for I now have a standing desk.

I have three main titles, 6th grade Science Teacher, Middle School Advisor, and Middle School Division Head. I also work with faculty to make sure they are preparing students well.
What was your previous job?
It was very similar to the job I have now. I was the 6th grade math and science teacher. I was also the Academic Dean at Hualalai in Hawaii.
What do you like about Westside?
I really like the students; they are great kids that really shape the community here at Westside.
What are the pros and con about your job?
I like working with both students and faculty, and making sure that they are always being considerate. A con is that It can be challenging being a teacher and an administrator because of the differences in behavior.

by Kayla and Amber

Get ready for the second annual Westside Middle School musical!
This semester 27 talented, middle school students are blocking and choreographing the classic play known as Alice in Wonderland. With the help of 22 technical theater students, they already have a good start on ideas for the scenery, costume design and makeup.  "We are really excited about the cast and how the show will come together," a quote from the producer herself, Sue Boyum.
Unlike last semester, there will be three performances, May 14th, 15th and 16th, all at 6:30 pm in the MPR. The musical cast are always looking for paint supplies, like latex paint, rollers and brushes. If you would like to donate, please contact Sue or Jillian at sueb@westsideshool.org or jillianh@westsideschool.org.
Hope you will attend this phenomenal showing of Alice in Wonderland this year!

Super Bowl Parade

by Chrissy and Kenji

The Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl parade was a once in a lifetime experience. There were more than 700,000 fans attending the parade. Fans from all around the US and Canada came to participate in the parade and see some of their favorite Seattle Seahawks. Seahawk players traveled in open military vehicles, and their families traveled in buses. Seahawk management traveled in Ducks and Humvees. Seahawks’ running back, Marshawn Lynch, was on the front of one of the Ducks, throwing skittles into the crowd.  Fans repaid  him with a Native American tribal drum. When players Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas passed by, the crowd started chanting LOB (legion of boom) repeatedly. Although the parade was all in good spirit, it did cause some damage to The Pergola, a historical site Downtown. Some local businesses were also damaged. Not to mention the hardship workers faced trying commute to and from work. Despite this, it was an amazing day for Seattle sports and the Pacific Northwest in general.

Chinese New Year Assembly at Westside

By Kate and Isabel

Friday, January 31st was the celebration of the Chinese New Year or Gong Xi Fa Zai. Although here at Westside we are calling it the "year of the horse". That same day we had a school-wide assembly to commemorate the festival filled with a lion dance and traditional music including drums, symbols and a gong. This was performed by some of our middle school students. As well as that, there were Chinese songs sung by many of the lower school classes.
Aside from in school celebrations, there are many traditions that Chinese families and individuals participate in preparation for the new year. They eat oranges symbolizing gold which brings good fortune and. many have New Years Eve dinners with family.  Leading up the New Year people often clean and tidy their homes to clear out the old and bring in the new.
We wish everyone a Happy New Year and can't wait to see what the next year brings both in school and outside.
